Round
the world in 100 Pages
How
can a secretary add pages to an elaborate site?
Producing the hundreds
of pages which form Diageo's new corporate
site required expertise in design and
many different areas of programming.
However,
the Around the World section,
where the numerous aid projects
which Diageo sponsors are featured,
will require constant changes
and additions.
It is essential that a section
like this is editable by in-house
staff, and that adding and editing
pages should require no
special expertise.
Page
content comes from
an Access file.
To achieve this objective
we use a custom SQL interface to a simple
Microsort Access database. Page appearance
derives from external HTML templates
(and these templates can easily be changed
to accord with any new site design,
should this arise).
New case studies
are added to a standard Access database.
Images and captions are added to a secondary
table in the same database. This is a simple
secretarial task, requiring no special expertise.
All output is generated
automatically, always meeting the
design values of the parent site.
Search
menus are auto-generated - so
all options offered yield results.
Case
studies are searchable both by country and
by focus area, using a graphical interface. All
the drop menus offering search options are generated
from the database, ensuring that options which yield
no results cannot be selected
